Foundation Makeup for beginners

Hello everyone! It’s been a common observation of mine that even though the world of makeup has evolved a lot there are still some things that need to be clarified and explained. The most common mistake that I have observed among beginner girls is their choice of a foundation, choosing the right foundation shade and application of different kinds of foundations. In order to answer most of your queries about foundations, I thought about doing an in-depth article on foundation for beginners. This is an excellent start for those of you who have just joined the makeup squad, and even if you are already familiar with it, trust me you NEED to go through this to get rid of some misconceptions. Not only would find some tips and tricks but also an idea of whether you can make your foundation choice even better.

  1. What is a Foundation?
  2. Foundation For different Skin Types
  3. How to choose your foundation Shade?
  4. How to put on foundation ( 5 Steps )

A foundation, as its name suggests, is literally a “FOUNDATION” for your makeup. This is also called as a “BASE” because it is technically the BASE where the rest of your makeup is going to sit.

A foundation is going to make your face look “fairer” is one of the saddest misconceptions of all times.

What you need to understand is that the PURPOSE of a foundation is NOT to make you look fairer or darker; it’s going to make your face SMOOTH for the rest of the makeup application to be made easier.

2.  Foundation For different Skin Types

You might not know but there are DIFFERENT foundations for different skin types. Yes. Take your time to digest that.

Let me take you through different foundations for respective skin types:

Powder foundation is best for those of you with the following skin types:

  • Normal
  • Oily
  • Combination
  • Sensitive (prone to breakouts)

If you are not used to having that heavy feeling on your face, that gives you an illusion of you carrying all the weights of this world, go for POWDER foundations.

Advantages of Powder Foundations:

  • A less oily t-zone (Yes you wouldn’t have to worry about America invading your face for that immense oil that your face daily blesses you with)
  • Light in weight
  • An even toned skin just by the application of a little concealer on your blemishes

Disadvantages of Powder Foundations:

  • Light to Medium Coverage
  • They might turn chalky if the ingredients involve Talc

Who needs a liquid foundation?

Liquid Foundation is best for those of you with the following skin types:

  • Normal
  • Dry

Advantages of Liquid Foundations:

  • Dewy looking skin
  • EXCELLENT coverage
  • Maintaining hydration of skin
  • Amazing color range

Disadvantages of Liquid Foundations:

  • Heavy feeling on the face
  • Might clog pores

3. How to choose your foundation Shade?

Once you have decided what type of foundation is going to suit you according to your skin type, now it’s time to pick the RIGHT SHADE for yourself.

The foundation that you swatch on your arm or the back of the hand, is the right shade for you.

In order to clear this misconception, I have one word for you girls. NO.

  1. Go to the nearest drugstore and try it on yourself.
  2. Ask for help. Ask the lady with the respective counter to help you in this process. She has been trained for this.
  3. Swipethe shade alongside your jaw line. Swatch two or three closest shades, the shade that disappears into your skin is the right shade.
  4. Test it in day-light.Most of the times the lighting inside stores is pale. So step out and see the shade in natural lighting.

Congratulations, till now you have chosen the right kind of foundation and the right shade for yourself

Now comes the tricky part, how to achieve the perfect smoothest natural finish?
This is solely based upon the methods by which you apply your foundation.

Following are the five steps to put on foundation flawlessly:

Step 1:

Tips to manage combination skin

Wash off any excess oil or dirt from your face using a good quality face wash. Remember that no matter how expensive your foundation, if your skin isn’t taken care of properly, everything is going to look bad. You can find some skincare tips here.

Step 2:

Face Moiturizer

Moisturize your skin using a light weight moisturizer. Don’t go too heavy though.

Step 3:

how to apply foundation

Apply your foundation using a foundation brush or a makeup sponge. Some of the best known brushes include the Real Techniques Foundation brushes or the Sigma Brushes, and who doesn’t know about the oh-so-famous and expensive BeautyBlender.

This is completely up to you. The foundation brush would give you a heavier coverage and the sponge would sheer out the foundation a bit.

If you are using a brush, use it in stippling motions and if you are using a sponge, blend it using rolling motions. Dab the foundation and don’t stretch it.

Step 4:

The foundation would give you all the coverage you need but the blemishes and acne scars never leave you alone, do they?

In order to hide them, use a concealer. Concealer is another beauty essential that can brighten up tired face and cover up unsightly spots. I will do a complete new article on Difference between Concealer and foundation AND how to apply concealer very soon !!

Step 5:

Set your foundation using a setting powder. If you tend to have a dry skin you can skip this step, for those of you with oily skin types, do go through this step on top of my suggested foundations for oily skin types.

You now look like a model with the most perfectly matched and amazingly applied foundation. Feeling pretty enough to appear on the cover of VOGUE? I know that feeling. The feeling is mutual.
